SUMMARY:Cultural Alliances: The Imperatives and Challenges of Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:For the third iteration of Museum 2050’s annual symposium\, the platform looks to explore the concept of collaboration\, both in its proliferation in recent partnerships amongst museums\, particularly in China\, and as a centerpiece of creative production. We wish to ask the fundamental question: why collaborate? What is the purpose of these cultural alliances? Whether they are between distinct institutions\, artists\, professionals\, spaces or disciplines\, what is gained when we collaborate? What is lost? How can we best foster collaboration? This year\, Museum 2050 seeks to broaden the discussion beyond the realm of the Chinese context in order to investigate why museums make the decision to go beyond their walls to forge partnerships\, both with other actors in the arts and those in other fields.

SUMMARY:What is a Museum? Part 2: The Function of Collecting
DESCRIPTION:The defining essential unity in museums are the functions of collecting\, preserving\, documenting\, researching\, exhibiting and in other ways\, communicating and interpreting evidence of human culture and history for the benefit of everyone. Should our collections shift as our communities do? In a world aimed towards political correctness\, how do we address collections as a result of power and colonization? The elephant in the room … deaccession!

SUMMARY:VRAR Chicago: The Next Evolution in Arts & Culture
DESCRIPTION:Even during travel restrictions\, augmented and virtual reality allow us to experience arts & culture from far away places. While it will never be a replacement for seeing the Mona Lisa or the Great Wall of China in person\, VR and AR can bring these masterpieces right into your home.\nPrograms like “Let’s Create! Pottery VR\,” “Tilt Brush\,” and “Kingspray Graffiti Simulator” allow our imaginations to run wild and try new art forms without the mess. Augmented reality can make works of art come alive\, jump out of their frames and tell their story. Even programs as “simple” as Google Earth VR can shrink the world and allow people to walk a distant street\, admire the local architecture and even observe the remote fashion trends.\nImmersive technologies make the world seem both approachably smaller and larger than life with the wealth of possibilities to explore. Join us as we explore how arts and culture are being made more accessible through augmented and virtual reality.

SUMMARY:The Art Museum in the Digital Age – 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Belvedere Research Center organizes its third international conference on the digital transformation of the art museum. The 2021 edition will focus on online collections and the re-contextualization of the museum object in the digital universe.\nDuring the COVID lock down\, the call for online availability of museum objects became louder. Many museums responded immediately by putting existing content online and introducing tools to enable virtual visits. This push again highlights the potential of online collections: they allow both expert and lay audiences to explore and enjoy the collection\, either as a goal in itself\, or as a means to plan a visit. However\, the value\, or at least the usability\, of the digitized materials (i.e.\, images and information) in the web’s massive eco-system depends to a large extent on their uniqueness and trustworthiness.\nFollowing this rationale\, the five-day event will gather contributions addressing primarily – but not exclusively – the following topics.

SUMMARY:The Art Newspaper Live: Can You Game the Art Market?
DESCRIPTION:Join The Art Newspaper for an informal discussion on 26 February at 4pm GMT between our Art Market Eye team of Georgina Adam\, Anna Brady and Anny Shaw as they give their views on some of this year’s top headlines\, ask whether art fairs’ newest revenue generating strategies – or gimmicks – will work\, and\, yes\, ponder whether a Gamestop-style short squeeze could play havoc with the art market in the same way it has the stock market. Or\, is price manipulation rife in the art market anyway? Presented in partnership with Gurr Johns.

SUMMARY:The Literoom Summit 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Literoom is a think tank\, an incubator\, and an accelerator – an open association based in Basel\, Switzerland\, the home of several world class art institutions and the centre of the art world for one week each year thanks to Art Basel. The association was founded in late 2020 by five individuals with the same goal: to create a catalyst for digital innovation in the art sector.\nFor the very first time\, we will be providing a platform to listen to what the art industry needs. With this inaugural event\, we’d like to start a discussion and facilitate the connection between the art industry and tech entrepreneurs and thereby hopefully create positive momentum for an entire industry.

SUMMARY:Unpacking the Toolkit: In Conversation With the Authors of "Tools and Approaches for Transforming Museum Experience"
DESCRIPTION:The practical\, financial\, and social impacts of the coronavirus alongside a national reckoning with racial injustice has increased the urgency to address why\, how\, and for whom museums exist in the 21st century. For museum professionals\, this pivotal question raises another: how might we transform our collective approach to designing museum experiences to better reflect the communities we serve?\nJoin Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum’s Interaction Lab for the release of Tools and Approaches for Transforming Museum Experience\, a toolkit that contributes to this critically important conversation. The toolkit was co-authored by 15 museum professionals\, who were convened by the Interaction Lab in Fall 2020 thanks to the support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. In their current roles\, the co-authors represent diverse perspectives from across visitor experience including: curatorial\, education\, audience research\, programming and public engagement\, visitor services\, exhibition design\, digital\, and accessibility.

SUMMARY:Connected to Culture LIVE: Online Creativity and Safety with Young People
DESCRIPTION:Engagement in arts and culture supports young people’s social development and wellbeing\, but for many organisations responding to the pandemic has meant quickly adapting offline activities to online\, creating new digital programmes and engaging and communicating with young people digitally. In this session we will explore lessons learnt and how in a new digital climate we can find balance between protection\, safety and participation.\nWe will discuss challenges around supporting expression and meaningful engagement while also keeping young people safe online\, particularly at a time when they continue to be physically isolated from teachers\, peers and mentors. We will touch on ways to connect with young people based on where and how they want to engage and hear from organisations that are successfully working with and empowering our future digital leaders and changemakers.\nJoin us for this conversation where we will explore: \n\nRisks and safety online – balancing protection and participation\nEngaging and empowering young people through digital\nLessons learned in 2020 and informing future online spaces

SUMMARY:Museums: How do we Evaluate the Relevance of Digital Projects?
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic\, we have attended multiple webinars and online activities where the need to deepen the digitization of museums has been highlighted. Practically all the reflections have shown that in general\, an evident delay accumulates in strategic management processes and that; the opportunity should be taken to give it a new impetus. The danger is that\, as is often the case in museums\, an executive policy is chosen rather than a strategic one. Priority is given to evidencing some action on the part of the museum rather than designing a project linked to long-term strategic planning. On the other hand\, an adequate conceptual separation has not always been established between the idea of offering the digital version of a museum to simply perfecting its website.\nGiven this\, as part of our mission here at El Museo Transformador\, we have developed an evaluation tool that helps to make decisions in a reflective way\, inviting us not to do so only in emergency contexts. These decisions must not only take into account the technological aspects but above all the priorities of sustainability over time.
