SUMMARY:Cities and Museums Webinar Forum - 8th Session
DESCRIPTION:THINK DIGITAL. Towards the museum of tomorrow. Technological advances and their transformative potential.\nThe aim of this webinar is to debate the relationship between citizens and the culture and art through the museum and other cultural organizations. In a time of extraordinary social transformation\, a consequence of technological and scientific advances\, borders are diluted\, and citizens can fully participate in the cultural events\, contributing with new perspectives and enriching the narratives.\nThroughout this forum\, a group of prominent artists\, theorists and cultural agents\, experts in digital thought and production\, will analyse the characteristics of this new humanism\, the changes occurred in communication and storytelling\, as well as the way art is produced and consumed\, due to the undoubted transformative capacity of digital tools.

SUMMARY:Unpacking the Toolkit: In Conversation With the Authors of "Tools and Approaches for Transforming Museum Experience"
DESCRIPTION:The practical\, financial\, and social impacts of the coronavirus alongside a national reckoning with racial injustice has increased the urgency to address why\, how\, and for whom museums exist in the 21st century. For museum professionals\, this pivotal question raises another: how might we transform our collective approach to designing museum experiences to better reflect the communities we serve?\nJoin Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum’s Interaction Lab for the release of Tools and Approaches for Transforming Museum Experience\, a toolkit that contributes to this critically important conversation. The toolkit was co-authored by 15 museum professionals\, who were convened by the Interaction Lab in Fall 2020 thanks to the support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. In their current roles\, the co-authors represent diverse perspectives from across visitor experience including: curatorial\, education\, audience research\, programming and public engagement\, visitor services\, exhibition design\, digital\, and accessibility.

SUMMARY:Connected to Culture LIVE: Online Creativity and Safety with Young People
DESCRIPTION:Engagement in arts and culture supports young people’s social development and wellbeing\, but for many organisations responding to the pandemic has meant quickly adapting offline activities to online\, creating new digital programmes and engaging and communicating with young people digitally. SUMMARY:Museums: How do we Evaluate the Relevance of Digital Projects?
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic\, we have attended multiple webinars and online activities where the need to deepen the digitization of museums has been highlighted. Practically all the reflections have shown that in general\, an evident delay accumulates in strategic management processes and that; the opportunity should be taken to give it a new impetus. The danger is that\, as is often the case in museums\, an executive policy is chosen rather than a strategic one. Priority is given to evidencing some action on the part of the museum rather than designing a project linked to long-term strategic planning. On the other hand\, an adequate conceptual separation has not always been established between the idea of offering the digital version of a museum to simply perfecting its website.\nGiven this\, as part of our mission here at El Museo Transformador\, we have developed an evaluation tool that helps to make decisions in a reflective way\, inviting us not to do so only in emergency contexts. These decisions must not only take into account the technological aspects but above all the priorities of sustainability over time.

Join us for a conversation about how arts organizations can chart their future and accommodate opposing points of view in an era of great social upheaval.\nWe will be asking:\n-How much of a responsibility do the arts have to reflect the society in which they are embedded?\n-Can an arts organization really represent a plurality of views\, and how do you work this within the inevitable restraints of funders?\n-Can individual artists’ views fit within the current call to represent a broader perspective\, and do artist collectives ever work?

SUMMARY:EuropeanaTech x AI Webinar Series: Introduction and the Saint George on a Bike Project
DESCRIPTION:How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) help us to enrich and research cultural heritage collections? How can ML models be adapted to the complexities of historical and cultural material it has not been trained for? Which biases can we reveal in historical collections? How can we gain new perspectives by using AI in researching cultural heritage data? Our new webinar series will discuss these questions with you and present projects and people who are reflecting on exactly these matters.\nThe EuropeanaTech x AI webinars will kick off on Friday 23 April with an introduction to the series and the Saint George on a Bike Project\, which aims to use machine learning to improve the quality and quantity of open metadata associated with European cultural heritage. Project partners will present its objectives and achievements\, as well as the obstacles it faces\, especially with respect to available data sources. You will learn about making Machine Learning work (better) for improving the quality and quantity of open metadata associated with European cultural heritage imagery\, and have the opportunity to discuss the challenges of data gathering for AI projects in cultural heritage and how to possibly circumvent them.

SUMMARY:Affirming the Social Value of Museums
DESCRIPTION:For years\, museums have talked about their indispensability to society. Yet during the pandemic\, most were closed for extended periods of time. Why is it that museums were not considered essential enough to keep open during the pandemic? And now that Covid-19 may be drawing to a close\, how can museums make a stronger case for their indispensability? What are the best arguments for keeping museums open and operational?\nOn the heels of CIMAM’s recent survey titled Why should museums remain open and operational? and Szántó’s latest book\, The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues\, New York-based author and cultural strategy adviser András Szántó moderates a discussion between four prominent members of CIMAM\, all of whom are featured in the book. \n\nRhana Devenport\, Director\, Art Gallery of South Australia\, Adelaide\, Australia.\nMami Kataoka\, Director\, Mori Art Museum\, Tokyo\, Japan.\nHans Ulrich Obrist\, Artistic Director\, Serpentine Galleries\, London\, United Kingdom.\nPhilip Tinari\, Director\, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA)\, Beijing\, China.

SUMMARY:DSI Webinar: Museums Going Digital - Why Invest on Quality Digital Content?
DESCRIPTION:The NEMO report “Follow-up survey on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on museums in Europe” issued in January 2021 highlighted the increased importance of digital museum offers in a changing world. Many institutions received financial support for new investments in digital infrastructures and/or digital programmes but they also claimed lack of skills in digital literacy. It’s now time for the museums to (re)think their digital strategy to supply their visitors with quality services. This webinar will address the evolution of the digital approach of museums in a post-pandemic world and illustrates the Europeana frameworks and resources that the European museums may apply to create\, share and reuse quality digital content.\nThe webinar is targeted to Museum professionals interested in joining Europeana.

SUMMARY:EuropeanaTech x AI Webinar Series: Cultural AI
DESCRIPTION:How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) help us to enrich and research cultural heritage collections? How can ML models be adapted to the complexities of historical and cultural material it has not been trained for? Which biases can we reveal in historical collections? How can we gain new perspectives by using AI in researching cultural heritage data? Our new webinar series will discuss these questions with you and present projects and people who are reflecting on exactly these matters.\nOn Friday 7 May\, we will explore Cultural AI\, a new lab for culturally valued AI in the Netherlands. The vision of Cultural AI is to accelerate excellent research on the intersection of humanities and artificial intelligence. Core lab themes revolve around public values\, like diversity and inclusivity\, investigating how technology can deal with biases in data\, account for multiple perspectives and subjective interpretations\, and bridge cultural differences.

SUMMARY:Research and Digital Cultural Heritage: New Impact Horizons
DESCRIPTION:The programme has been designed by the symposium scientific committee\, which considered a range of the implications that building digital collections and their reuse have: from the choices made by cultural heritage professionals in directing their efforts and resources\, to the opening up of research practices for community participation and non-specialist contributions; from the obstacles to creating impact through cultural heritage resources (such as lack of digital literacy or inequalities) to the need for including the perspectives of digital audiences in the cultural heritage discourse. \nWe tried to strike a balance in offering an ambitious\, full\, and diverse programme\, while using an agile structure that reflects the potential and limits of digital events. It will cover topics such as policy and innovation; practices of digitisation and re-contextualisation; participatory practices and methods in engagement and impact assessment; digital audiences and new socio-political perspectives. 20 speakers will share their insights and diverse experiences across four 90 minute sessions\, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. This will allow the participation of professionals from different time zones. \nOur aim for this symposium is to develop an understanding of how the Europeana Impact Framework can help build capacity in research contexts and so\, more broadly\, what value thinking about impact can bring to them. The event is the start of a wider conversation looking at three longer-term objectives: to scope potential areas of impact and identify audiences; to find a shared language for impact and grow an evidence basis; to explore how Europeana and research infrastructures can structurally collaborate to develop an impact-oriented approach.
