SUMMARY:MAAM 2020: Do Museums Still Need Objects
DESCRIPTION:Once perceived as static “cabinets of curiosities”\, museums are now evolving their missions to meet the needs of their ever-changing communities. As we think about how museums will look in the future\, we also need to think about how collections serve diverse audiences. The question remains: Do museums still need objects?\nThe MAAM Annual Conference will examine this question in its entirety. We will discuss the ways in which art\, history\, and science collections can play a new\, or different\, role in the museum. We will discuss how digital technologies make collections more accessible to communities. We will discuss how museums thrive with and without collections. We will discuss tough topics regarding collections. We want to know what you think about this question!\nRegistration will open the week of September 1\, 2020.\nWhat is the theme?\nThe theme of this year’s conference is “Do Museums Still Need Objects?”. Our Program Committee found this theme to be relevant amidst the pandemic and period of social activism that we are seeing today. We recognize that the theme is larger than a simple question of whether a museum needs to have objects\, but also begs the questions: how do we interpret the objects we have? How do we manage interpretation without a collection? How do we use controversial objects to discuss difficult topics?\nWhat will the program look like?\nThe Virtual Annual Meeting will take place over October 5-16\, 2020. We will have approximately 10 days worth of content including webinars\, program affinity group meetings\, the Weil Lecture\, our Annual Meeting\, and other networking opportunities. A formal schedule will be shared prior to the opening of registration in September.

It is clear the art market is headed in a new direction—and if flights are grounded and borders closed due to the pandemic\, perhaps that new direction will be a “glocal” one.\nJoin The Art Newspaper’s art market experts in conversation with industry thought leaders like Sunny Rahbar\, Ayo Adeyinka and Clare McAndrew to discuss why galleries of all sizes are teaming up to try out new ideas\, the shift to the “glocal” and what the art world can do to prepare for what could be a radically different future.\nTalk Series Schedule\n5pm BST // 12pm ET // 9am PT\n8 October\nIs the new spirit of collaboration lip-service or game-changing?\nFeaturing\nPilar Corrias\, Pilar Corrias Gallery // Caroline Douglas\, Contemporary Art Society // Sunny Rahbar\, Third Line // Neil Wenman\, Hauser & Wirth // moderated by Anna Brady\, The Art Newspaper\n15 October\nBreaking boundaries—local is the new global\nFeaturing\nRachel Lehmann\, Lehmann Maupin // Sundaram Tagore\, Sundaram Tagore Gallery // Rakeb Sile\, Addis Fine Art // Ayo Adeyinka\, Tafeta // moderated by Anny Shaw\, The Art Newspaper\n22 October\nEconomist Clare McAndrew in conversation with Georgina Adam

SUMMARY:Expanded Formats | Reimagining Art Economies Online
DESCRIPTION:During this interactive event\, Lucy Rose Sollitt and Jo Townshend convene a panel of experts working in the field of art and technology to consider:\nWhat if approaches to selling and experiencing art online were based on a deeper understanding of the artistic possibilities and politics of technologies? Might alternatives to dominant economies be revealed?\nTogether we will consider a range of models and ideas imagined by artists\, thinkers\, critical technologists working with and reflecting on networked technologies. From blockchain enabling alternative models for selling and supporting creation of born digital artworks\, to curated content and art based on Web 1.0 principles. It will explore whether such approaches offer viable alternatives for generating sales while freeing art from dominant market dynamics. And reflect on which perspectives could anticipate future artistic economies.\n–\nThis event will take place via Zoom. A link to join the event will be sent to you shortly.

SUMMARY:The Future of the Blockbuster: A Need for Change?
DESCRIPTION:In this forum\, panellists will consider whether\, when the pandemic ebbs\, they expect and would welcome a return of these large-scale exhibitions. Or whether they think that the current Covid-related limitations – and the demands for greater focus on social justice and concern for the environment – require a reconsideration of institutional purpose\, financial models\, and audience needs. Is an imaginative focus on permanent collections and local audiences the path ahead for some institutions and\, if so\, will audiences and critics shift their expectations accordingly? How best are the interests of knowledge generation served? Is there an opportunity for a greater sharing of resources and expertise across the sector? Will a digital offering need to be re-evaluated as more than a secondary alternative\, particularly if audiences remain reluctant to travel?

SUMMARY:MCN 2020 VIRTUAL: Sustainability: Preserve/Progress
DESCRIPTION:What sustains us? The conference theme for MCN 2020 VIRTUAL—an experience like no other previous conference—is Sustainability: Preserve/Progress. Together\, we will explore the tension between transformation and longevity. Sustainability has many facets—technological\, financial\, environmental\, cultural\, social\, and personal. Let’s confront these issues\, retool our skills\, reconnect with one another\, and work together for a more equitable digital future in museums.

SUMMARY:Europeana 2020 Crisis\, Change and Culture
DESCRIPTION:CRISIS\, CHANGE AND CULTURE\n\n\n2020 is not the year we thought it was going to be. A global pandemic has changed our day-to-day lives. The Covid crisis has brought home how connected our lives are across the globe\, while the injustices and societal inequalities that exist between them have been thrown into sharp relief. This demands a response from us. Above all\, this year has shown us that we need to build more coherent\, coordinated and effective approaches to dealing with the challenges facing society\, whether it is a short-lived natural disaster\, a pandemic\, or the ongoing battle to combat climate change.\nThis is as true for the cultural heritage sector as it is for our wider society .\nIn recent months\, culture has shown to be a compelling force: people turned to digital technology and communication to share culture and come together as families\, in friendship groups and as communities. As we move through and on from these crises\, how can digital culture create meaningful and positive change in our society?\nNow is the time to look critically at the role of cultural heritage\, and reimagine it.\nEuropeana 2020 builds on that momentum to explore how – together – we can develop an open\, knowledgeable and creative society.

SUMMARY:The Taste Of Art
DESCRIPTION:It has long been an accepted belief that a museum is a temple of art. These days\, however\, priorities of museums have shifted from storing exhibits and expanding their collections to attracting the attention of various audiences.\nIncreasingly more often\, museums seek to become cultural institutions of interest. In their turn\, additional museum services\, such as cafes and restaurants play an important role in positioning the museum as an accessible place for family recreation\, meetings of friends and business negotiations.\nIt is an obvious fact that cafes and restaurants in museums help these institutions gain additional profits. However\, do these structural subdivisions of the museum serve not only the commercial but also the representative function? Are cafes and restaurants in museums only places for museum visitors to have a quick snack\, or can they serve as independent recreation spaces? Should cafes and restaurants in museums be incorporated into museum expositions? Do museum restaurants and cafes also possess some specific features?

SUMMARY:Cities & Museums Webinar Forum - 4th Session
DESCRIPTION:The creation of social and economic networks for the cultural and artistic establishment in times of crisis\nGiven the reduction in public subsidies\, it is necessary for civil society to get involved and participate in the conservation\, research and dissemination of artistic heritage\, as well as in its production. We are interested in knowing the different formulas and approaches adopted by both public and private museums in Spain and beyond. Museums and cultural centers have the opportunity\, in this digital era\, to intensify the provision of services to the artistic sector and society\, both to local and global audiences\, and even to redefine their functions\, mission and vision.

SUMMARY:Cultural and Creative Sectors and Local Development
DESCRIPTION:What is the issue?\nThe direct and indirect impacts of culture on local development are largely achieved through cultural participation and access of diverse groups of population to cultural amenities and activities. Cultural participation is linked to a number of areas of social and economic impact: social inclusion\, education and life-long learning\, well-being and health. High levels of cultural participation might be conducive to a favourable social environment for cultural and creative entrepreneurship\, thereby enhancing the impact of cultural and creative production on job creation. In many cities and regions\, cultural participation and specialisations in the cultural and creative sectors are evolving\, and being used to tackle and societal challenges (e.g. climate change) from new angles\, favouring resilience\, skills creation and prosocial behavioural changes. High levels of cultural participation also create the premises for a stronger support of cultural spending and cultural policies from the public opinion\, thus contributing to the financial and social sustainability of cultural and creative sectors. \nThe OECD-EC Policy Webinar\nThere is however still a lack of capacity at subnational levels to measure cultural participation and design instruments that can effectively increase it. This policy webinar will provide an opportunity to learn from latest academic evidence on the economic and social impacts of cultural participation\, approaches to better capture it at regional level and instruments to increase it. The event shall also showcase a number of interesting European and non-European cases in this regard.

SUMMARY:Cultural Alliances: The Imperatives and Challenges of Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:For the third iteration of Museum 2050’s annual symposium\, the platform looks to explore the concept of collaboration\, both in its proliferation in recent partnerships amongst museums\, particularly in China\, and as a centerpiece of creative production. We wish to ask the fundamental question: why collaborate? What is the purpose of these cultural alliances? Whether they are between distinct institutions\, artists\, professionals\, spaces or disciplines\, what is gained when we collaborate? What is lost? How can we best foster collaboration? This year\, Museum 2050 seeks to broaden the discussion beyond the realm of the Chinese context in order to investigate why museums make the decision to go beyond their walls to forge partnerships\, both with other actors in the arts and those in other fields.

SUMMARY:Museums+Tech 2020
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 conference asks what role digital can play for museums in a crisis. How can museums and other cultural organisations respond to crisis\, both in terms of their collections\, programmes\, and internally? Do they have what it takes to survive when their doors can no longer open to the public? What role can digital play in responding to crisis and how might it be used to respond to issues of colonisation\, access and inclusion? The MCG’s annual conference brings together practitioners\, researchers\, funders\, and those from related cultural heritage and technology sectors from around the world.

SUMMARY:(Asia) Virtual Event: 2021 Culture + Trends Report: Happiness Reset
DESCRIPTION:What defines the post-2020 consumer?\n2020 has been eventful to say the least\, but amidst the crises we’ve witnessed\, there is a silver lining. Confronted with a global pandemic we collectively opened our doors to new attitudes\, behaviors and values\, changing how we seek and attain happiness\, a happiness reset you could say. Happiness has always been the holy grail of human life\, yet the events of the last year have caused a shift in how we achieve it and will try to do so in the future.\nAs experts in human behavior\, we are often asked: what is next?\nTo answer this\, we use a unique methodology\, combining a macro analysis and qualitative exploration with our leading-edge consumer network\, to identify 14 trends that have shaped the post-2020 consumer. A final stage of quantification by 18\,000 consumers in 18 markets\, enables us to understand the strength of attitude and behavior of consumers in relation to each trend.\nWe explore these trends and the implications for brands in our 2021 Culture + Trends Report: Happiness Reset.

SUMMARY:VRAR Chicago: The Next Evolution in Arts & Culture
DESCRIPTION:Even during travel restrictions\, augmented and virtual reality allow us to experience arts & culture from far away places. While it will never be a replacement for seeing the Mona Lisa or the Great Wall of China in person\, VR and AR can bring these masterpieces right into your home.\nPrograms like “Let’s Create! Pottery VR\,” “Tilt Brush\,” and “Kingspray Graffiti Simulator” allow our imaginations to run wild and try new art forms without the mess. Augmented reality can make works of art come alive\, jump out of their frames and tell their story. Even programs as “simple” as Google Earth VR can shrink the world and allow people to walk a distant street\, admire the local architecture and even observe the remote fashion trends.\nImmersive technologies make the world seem both approachably smaller and larger than life with the wealth of possibilities to explore. Join us as we explore how arts and culture are being made more accessible through augmented and virtual reality.
