SUMMARY:Storytelling with Digital Culture
DESCRIPTION:Humans have always told\, retold\, and listened to stories. They allow us to make sense of the world\, to learn\, and to empathise with and connect with each other. Cultural heritage institutions are increasingly using digital media to share the stories of their collections online.\nIn this webinar\, we hear from members of a Europeana Task Force that has been collecting and analysing examples of online digital storytelling from the cultural heritage sector. Discover some of the examples we loved and find out how we approached the task of analysing our emotional reactions to them.\nWe are also delighted to welcome some of the people behind the examples the Task Force used as case studies.

SUMMARY:The Inclusive Museum Conference: What Museums Post Pandemic?
DESCRIPTION:What Museums Post Pandemic?\nVisitors\nNo longer the universal individual citizen of our recent modern aspirations\, visitors of today are recognizably diverse.\nForms of Engagement\nWhat is the role today of the reader\, the viewer\, the audience\, the citizen\, the customer\, the patron?\nModalities of Representation\nThe emerging communications environment—in which image\, sound\, and word are all made of the same digital stuff—affords new openings for museums and new challenges. \nReimagining the Scholarly Conference\nTo support the range of options\, and flexibility needed in our current climate\, we will offer a blended conference experience. You do not need to commit either to a place-based or virtual presentation at the time of submission. You can present both ways\, or change your mode of the presentation if your preferences change. The choice to participate virtually could also be a moral decision – for the planet\, for security\, or when the financial burden of travel is too great. We aim to foster spaces that align with principles of social justice and community development.

SUMMARY:2021 ICEE Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:From September 27 to October 1\, 2021\, the 2021 ICOM ICEE Annual Conference will be held in Geneva\, Switzerland\, in collaboration with the Museum of Art and History of the City of Geneva (MAH)\, and ICOM Switzerland. The preliminary plan features four days of keynote speeches\, panel sessions\, networking opportunities\, private visits to exhibitions and museum collections in Geneva\, and a one-day excursion to Lausanne.\nThe safety of our members\, participants\, partners\, and collaborators is our top priority. As we write this message\, it is our hope that we will be able to meet face to face in Geneva at the end of September. We will keep you informed.\nThe conference theme\, along with the call for papers and more exciting news about the 2021 conference will be announced in our April newsletter. Please save the date for the conference. We hope everyone will join us in for the 2021 ICEE Conference in Geneva\, face to face or digitally!\nA few sponsorship opportunities are available. SUMMARY:MUŻE.X: Shaping Museum Futures
DESCRIPTION:As museums navigate uncertain times\, some seek to look back in the hope that the new normal will recover the lost publics\, most of whom can only be reached online intermittently and in between lockdowns and restricted access procedures. Others have slowly but surely embarked on systemic change. This conference seeks to present the latest thinking\, actions\, and initiatives that modestly or radically depart from the traditional museum idea\, to rethink the museum of the future. We are keen on showcasing the latest developments in the museum landscape\, be they reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic\, conceptual initiatives that have been in the pipeline for a while\, or tangible projects happening and evolving in the now\, and which may well inform\, influence\, and define the museum of the future. We are particularly keen on showcasing the lessons learnt over the past year and the ways and means how these have been overcome. Yet\, we areUni also eager to create spaces for critical reflections that can help shape museum futures.

SUMMARY:Innovating Cultural Heritage Through Digitalisation
DESCRIPTION:While many cultural heritage sites were closed for long periods of time during the pandemic\, they did not stay still. It was the perfect incentive to focus and find innovative ways to keep visitors engaged.\nDo you know any good examples of innovative ways in which cultural heritage sites reinvented themselves? Do you have any thoughts and ideas of how they can improve the visitor engagement? Can we transpose what we learned from the journey of cultural heritage sites through the pandemic into our organizations and businesses?

SUMMARY:Speculative Values: Between the Institution and the NFT
DESCRIPTION:What can an institution become when it is organized with the network at its core? This question\, which has been a topic of concern for art institutions since the rise of the public internet\, is newly relevant thanks to the ascendance of blockchain-based forms of social organizing at a time of ongoing crisis for many legacy institutions.\nCollecting art\, making grants\, and other functions long performed by arts organizations are increasingly being taken on by blockchain-based digital cooperatives known as DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations)\, which are organized using tools such as NFTs (non-fungible tokens\, a means of certifying digital assets on the blockchain). Co-organized by the New Museum’s digital art affiliate Rhizome and interdisciplinary contemporary arts organization Kadist\, this event asks to what extent the work of institutions might be propelled forward using these new models.\nGathering artists\, developers\, and thinkers for a series of conversations and presentations\, the afternoon-long event will also consider the apparent contradictions inherent in these forms\, which are both financialized and cooperative; how these relate to the contradictions involved in traditional institutional models; and how these contradictions might play out in the future.

SUMMARY:CiMAM 2021 Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:While the pandemic appears to be the most pressing challenge today\, it is merely a vector of more global political and environmental changes. The conference will address the roles of artists and museums in this dramatically changing global situation. How can artists be agents of change\, and museums be places to test proposals for the communities of the future? Can museums guide processes of political and/or technological solutions?\nDuring the three days of discussions\, the conference will focus on the two interconnected current crises of Xenophobia and Climate Change\, and the sometimes hidden or unexplored connections between the two.\nKeynote speakers and relevant case-study presentations will show how institutions\, artists\, and thinkers working together can provide practical laboratories concerning these emerging issues and offer methodological tools to combat discriminatory and nationalistic tendencies in an increasingly divisive and divided world.

SUMMARY:Museum Association Conference 2021: Brave New World
DESCRIPTION:How can museums change lives in a post-pandemic world and help society respond to the many challenges it faces?\nIn the past year museums proved that they can be responsive\, creative and resourceful. We discuss what we can do to improve people’s health and wellbeing\, and give them hope and confidence in the future.\nWe examine the role we can play in tackling the urgent issues of our day\, including the climate crisis\, racism and discrimination.\nWe discuss how we can galvanise our collections and the expertise and passion of those who work with and for museums to engage audiences in new and exciting ways\, including the transformational impact of digital technology.

SUMMARY:ACM SIGGRAPH: Museums Immersive Experiences and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:There is a quiet revolution evolving in the realm of experiential museum design globally. Often called “Immersives”\, some of these digital-based experiences incorporate extended reality (XR) techniques such as augmented reality and virtual reality. Others employ large-scale\, sensory-engaging\, projected environments or domes that offer unique interactivity and many selfie opportunities to visitors. All generate feelings of discovery and what might be called “ah hah” moments.\nOur program focuses on an intriguing subset in the Immersives arena\, namely\, experiences focused on supporting cultural heritage preservation and historical issues of social importance.\nWe showcase several leading innovators behind pushing the creative technologies forward on this mission. Their projects have extended reach and utilize immersive display\, 360°degree panoramic content\, augmented reality (AR)\, spoken word interactivity\, natural language processing\, AI\, big data visualization and more.
