SUMMARY:The Future of the Blockbuster: A Need for Change?
DESCRIPTION:In this forum\, panellists will consider whether\, when the pandemic ebbs\, they expect and would welcome a return of these large-scale exhibitions. Or whether they think that the current Covid-related limitations – and the demands for greater focus on social justice and concern for the environment – require a reconsideration of institutional purpose\, financial models\, and audience needs. Is an imaginative focus on permanent collections and local audiences the path ahead for some institutions and\, if so\, will audiences and critics shift their expectations accordingly? How best are the interests of knowledge generation served? Is there an opportunity for a greater sharing of resources and expertise across the sector? Will a digital offering need to be re-evaluated as more than a secondary alternative\, particularly if audiences remain reluctant to travel?

SUMMARY:Expanded Formats | Reimagining Art Economies Online
DESCRIPTION:During this interactive event\, Lucy Rose Sollitt and Jo Townshend convene a panel of experts working in the field of art and technology to consider:\nWhat if approaches to selling and experiencing art online were based on a deeper understanding of the artistic possibilities and politics of technologies? Might alternatives to dominant economies be revealed?\nTogether we will consider a range of models and ideas imagined by artists\, thinkers\, critical technologists working with and reflecting on networked technologies. From blockchain enabling alternative models for selling and supporting creation of born digital artworks\, to curated content and art based on Web 1.0 principles. It will explore whether such approaches offer viable alternatives for generating sales while freeing art from dominant market dynamics. And reflect on which perspectives could anticipate future artistic economies.\n–\nThis event will take place via Zoom. A link to join the event will be sent to you shortly.

SUMMARY:The Museum of the Future: Digital Transformation and Immersive Technologies
DESCRIPTION:About the Topic\nThe pandemic has showed museums the many benefits of digital and immersive technologies such as virtual- and augmented reality. However\, there is a need for up-skilling and training of museums professionals on how to use the new technologies. Olaf Sperwer’s NEMO Webinar will give an overview of post-pandemic transformation concepts where digital and immersive technologies can be offered as new services to engage and share experiences with visitors and create new alternative funding sources. Based on case studies\, the participants will learn about possibilities and limits of digital and immersive technologies. They webinar will also discuss costs and monetarisation models.\nOlaf Sperwer\nOlaf Sperwer is a senior technology consultant and Head of Digital at VRmed Ltd (Immersive Technology Development) based in the UK. Sperwer has a master of Psychology and Economy. In his early professional life he developed TV formats for children such as “Logo”\, a news program on the German TV channel ZDF. SUMMARY:The Art Newspaper Live: Is the new spirit of collaboration lip-service or game-changing?
DESCRIPTION:New models for new times: Rethinking the art market in a changing world\nThe past year has presented the art trade with unprecedented challenges\, but it has also revealed how changes in the way we do business may re-shape the industry into a more collaborative one. More galleries are working together\, new art communities are coalescing and digital innovations are being developed at great speed. It is clear the art market is headed in a new direction—and if flights are grounded and borders closed due to the pandemic\, perhaps that new direction will be a “glocal” one.\nJoin The Art Newspaper’s art market experts in conversation with industry thought leaders like Sunny Rahbar\, Ayo Adeyinka and Clare McAndrew to discuss why galleries of all sizes are teaming up to try out new ideas\, the shift to the “glocal” and what the art world can do to prepare for what could be a radically different future.\nTalk Series Schedule\n5pm BST // 12pm ET // 9am PT\n8 October\nIs the new spirit of collaboration lip-service or game-changing?\nFeaturing\nPilar Corrias\, Pilar Corrias Gallery // Caroline Douglas\, Contemporary Art Society // Sunny Rahbar\, Third Line // Neil Wenman\, Hauser & Wirth // moderated by Anna Brady\, The Art Newspaper\n15 October\nBreaking boundaries—local is the new global\nFeaturing\nRachel Lehmann\, Lehmann Maupin // Sundaram Tagore\, Sundaram Tagore Gallery // Rakeb Sile\, Addis Fine Art // Ayo Adeyinka\, Tafeta // moderated by Anny Shaw\, The Art Newspaper\n22 October\nEconomist Clare McAndrew in conversation with Georgina Adam

SUMMARY:MAAM 2020: Do Museums Still Need Objects
DESCRIPTION:Once perceived as static “cabinets of curiosities”\, museums are now evolving their missions to meet the needs of their ever-changing communities. As we think about how museums will look in the future\, we also need to think about how collections serve diverse audiences. The question remains: Do museums still need objects?\nThe MAAM Annual Conference will examine this question in its entirety. We will discuss the ways in which art\, history\, and science collections can play a new\, or different\, role in the museum. We will discuss how digital technologies make collections more accessible to communities. We will discuss how museums thrive with and without collections. We will discuss tough topics regarding collections. We want to know what you think about this question!\nRegistration will open the week of September 1\, 2020.\nWhat is the theme?\nThe theme of this year’s conference is “Do Museums Still Need Objects?”. Our Program Committee found this theme to be relevant amidst the pandemic and period of social activism that we are seeing today. We recognize that the theme is larger than a simple question of whether a museum needs to have objects\, but also begs the questions: how do we interpret the objects we have? How do we manage interpretation without a collection? How do we use controversial objects to discuss difficult topics?\nWhat will the program look like?\nThe Virtual Annual Meeting will take place over October 5-16\, 2020. We will have approximately 10 days worth of content including webinars\, program affinity group meetings\, the Weil Lecture\, our Annual Meeting\, and other networking opportunities. A formal schedule will be shared prior to the opening of registration in September.

SUMMARY:"Events" in the Post-"Information" Age
DESCRIPTION:A/Professor Julia Sonnevend and Dr. Bernard Geoghegan\nThe New School and Kings College London\nWill the word information acquire new meanings under the pressure of technological transformations caused by the Covid-19 digital lockdown? How will people understand\, define and experience major or minor events when they are limited to virtual encounters\, online meetings and social media catch-ups? The webinar will interrogate old meanings and explore emerging connotations of what becomes information and whither the nature of an event in the seamless enfolding of the two in the online world.\nRegister via Zoom here\nAbout the Presenters\nJulia Sonnevend is Associate Professor of Sociology and Communication at the New School for Social Research in New York. She is the author of Stories Without Borders: The Berlin Wall and the Making of a Global Iconic Event (Oxford University Press\, 2016). Her research argues against the extensive rationalization and disenchantment of communication studies in contemporary social life\, to argue that people remain deeply influenced by stories\, events\, mythologies\, totemic objects and magnetic personalities.\nBernard Dionysius Geoghegan from Kings College London is a writer\, media theorist\, and historian of science. His research explores how digital technology–as an ensemble of instruments\, practices\, inscriptions\, and concepts–shapes science\, culture\, and the environment. His publications include articles on the emergence of the computer screen from geopolitical anxieties\, the changing conditions of digital interactivity from Cold War vigilance to anthropocentric globalism\, recent German media theory\, the technological infrastructures of spiritualism\, decolonial HCI\, critical interface studies\, and the ideology of smart cities.

SUMMARY:EU Presidency Trio Conference - Museums and Social Responsibility: Values revisited
DESCRIPTION:Within the framework of Germany’s presidency of the Council of the European Union\, NEMO and the German Museums Association are co-organising the online conference Museums and Social Responsibility – Values revisited from 17-18 September 2020. \nThe conference will focus on what social responsibility means for museums. Through their daily work\, museums make a significant contribution to social responsibility by dealing with questions that are connected to social cohesion\, social inclusion and social diversity. From 17-18 September\, we will discuss what museums can do\, what is needed\, and what still is missing to make an impact on our European society. We want to redefine and clarify the field for the museum landscape. \nThe detailed programme will soon be released. \n\nRegistration\n\nThe conference will take place on the online events platform Hopin. To participate in the conference\, you have to register via an account on Hopin. Sign-up will only take a minute and we guarantee you a smooth and engaging digital conference experience. \n\nCore subjects and issues of social responsibility\n\nThe International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines social responsibility according to seven core subjects; organizational governance\, labour practices\, the environment\, fair operating practices\, consumer issues\, community involvement and development. The latter two can also be recognised as cornerstones of museums’ everyday activities and actions. Therefore\, we have decided to focus on the core subjects community involvement and development to discuss what social responsibility means for museums. Short lectures\, panel discussions and workshops will be dedicated to the following topics: \n\nCommunity involvement\nEducation and culture\nEmployment creation and skills development\nTechnology development and access issues\nWealth and income creation issues\nSocial investment\nHealth Issues
