Spring will mark Zhao Gang’s (b. 1961, Beijing) first solo museum exhibition in the United States, with Zhao Gang: History Painting, opening at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) on May 24th. A key figure in the development of Chinese contemporary art and the youngest member of the avant-garde Stars Group — China’s first modern art movement — Gang is famous for his darkly ironic, raw approach to depicting Chinese history. His paintings, fourteen of which will be staged salon style in a 130-square-foot “apartment” built inside the PAMM showroom, address topics such as the legacy of imperial systems and the rise of China as an economic and cultural powerhouse in the new millennium.
