Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site in Philadelphia was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. Today the crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers are open to the public seven days a week, year-round. Admission to the prison includes a self-guided audio tour, titled “The Voices of Eastern State,” with printed Mandarin translations available for guests. Narrated by actor Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire, Fargo, and Armageddon) and featuring the voices of former wardens, guards, and inmates, the ‘intimate’ recording leads you through the eerie, echoing halls; one popular stop is Al Capone’s famously luxurious cell.
