The New York art and design community gathered earlier this month for the unveiling of “Diamond (Blue) 2023,” a new work by artist Jeff Koons in collaboration with Bernardaud, a family-owned porcelain company based in Limoges, France. The event, which drew a crowd of over 150 guests, marks the latest installment in a 10-year partnership between Koons and Bernardaud.
The limited-edition piece is part of Koons’ “Celebration” series and is made of Limoges porcelain. Bernardaud, founded in 1863, faced technical challenges in replicating the sculpture’s reflective surface and intricate glaze, according to company representatives. The resulting work aims to highlight “life’s moment of creation,” though the company did not elaborate further on this theme.
Attendees at the event included a mix of art collectors, designers, and architects from various countries. Among them were Liliana Cavendish, Rudiger Weng of Germany, and Eduardo Costantini Jr of Argentina. The event also featured key figures from the American art world, including Pauline Willis, CEO of the American Federation for the Arts, and Scott Drevnig, Director of Glass House.
Koons, a Pennsylvania native born in 1955, is a prominent figure in contemporary art, known for his sculptures that elevate everyday objects into art. His works are part of collections worldwide and have been exhibited globally.
Bernardaud remains family-owned and has been in operation for over 160 years. The company has a history of collaborating with contemporary artists and is known for its innovative porcelain-making techniques. This latest collaboration with Koons is part of Bernardaud’s ongoing efforts to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern art.
