This December, the vibrant and tactile world of Dan Lam‘s sculptural artistry will be on full display at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York, inviting audiences to explore a realm where art imitates the most dynamic aspects of nature.
Titled “Guttation,” the exhibition, which opens on December 16th, presents a new phase in Lam’s celebrated oeuvre. Known for her use of saturated neon hues and gravity-defying drips, Lam’s latest works promise to be an evolution of her signature style, inspired by the natural process of water secretion in plants and fungi. The result is a collection that seems to pulsate with life, each piece glistening as if covered in morning dew.
Dan Lam’s work has always danced on the edge of beauty and the bizarre, her sculptures evoking a sense of wonder and a desire to touch. This tactile allure is no accident; Lam’s pieces are as much an invitation to engage with texture and form as they are a visual feast. “I wanted my pieces to reflect the organic processes that inspired them while pushing the boundaries of the materials I work with,” Lam explains.
The exhibition, which runs until January 6th, will feature a range of artworks, including two larger-scale pieces and a 5 ft sculpture, among a collection of 40-60 works. Jennifer Rizzo, Director of Hashimoto Contemporary, anticipates the return of Lam’s work to NYC: “Dan’s art exists in a realm of oppositions, drawing the viewer in for a closer examination of the intricate and often conflicting elements.”
Dan Lam’s rise as an internationally acclaimed artist and social media influencer has been marked by her playful yet profound approach to contemporary art. Her pieces, often created with unconventional materials like foams, polyurethanes, and resins, challenge viewers to find beauty in the unexpected. With a client list that reads like a who’s who of pop culture and art collecting — from Miley Cyrus to the Tisch family — Lam’s influence and appeal are undeniable.
Hashimoto Contemporary, with its commitment to showcasing a mix of emerging and established talent, provides the perfect backdrop for Lam’s latest exhibition. The gallery, which has recently welcomed new partners Dasha Matsuura and Jennifer Rizzo, continues to foster a diverse dialogue within the art community.
For those intrigued by the intersection of art and the organic, “Guttation” offers a unique opportunity to delve into a sensory experience that is as intellectually stimulating as it is visually arresting. The exhibition is a testament to Dan Lam’s evolving narrative, one that continues to captivate and challenge the contemporary art scene.
“Dan Lam’s ‘Guttation’ is not just an exhibition; it’s a sensory journey that beckons the viewer to look closer and perhaps, in doing so, discover something new about the natural world and themselves,” says Rizzo. As the holiday season approaches, this exhibition promises to be a bright spot in New York’s winter calendar.
