A major new exhibition titled “Chiaroscuro” will open at ICD Brookfield Place in Dubai on February 27, exploring the interplay of light and shadow through works by 20 international artists and designers.
Curated by the iconic Michèle Lamy, the wife and collaborator of fashion designer Rick Owens, the show takes inspiration from Dubai’s desert landscape and its dramatic transitions from day to night. It is presented by ICD Brookfield Place Arts in partnership with Carpenters Workshop Gallery.
“We are excited to present Michèle Lamy’s curatorial approach through the selection of regional and international artists,” said Malak Abu-Qaoud, curator of ICD Brookfield Place Arts. “It is a great pleasure to work alongside Carpenters Workshop Gallery to create a cross-cultural exhibition.”
The exhibition is divided into sections evoking darkness and light. “The Darkness” features brooding works incorporating bronze and stone, including pieces by Atelier Van Lieshout, Wendell Castle and Rick Owens himself.
“The Light” explores the illuminating power of fire through glass, metal and other transformative mediums. Highlights include the dandelion sculptural installation “Fragile Futures” by Studio Drift and Vincenzo De Cotiis’ abstract marble arches.
Regional artists also contribute striking works, like Emirati Latifa Saeed’s marble sculpture “Braided,” UAE conceptual artist Zeinab Alhashemi’s industrial mixed media examining humanity’s impact on nature, and Dubai-based designer Omar Al Gurg’s interactive “Spike” sculptures.
Vibrant, pop-inspired pieces constitute another section illuminating the influx of color through light. Works range from the Campana Brothers’ whimsical “Banquete Chair” to Roger Herman’s neo-expressionist ceramic vases.
“Chiaroscuro attempts to redefine materiality by pushing the boundaries of mediums,” explained Ms. Lamy. The exhibition as a whole epitomizes her view that “without darkness, light cannot exist.”
It also cements ICD Brookfield Place’s growing reputation as a premier venue for showcasing leading regional and international talents during Art Dubai in March.
“We are proud to present the works of incredible local and universal artists,” said Ms. Lamy. “I am fighting for a new way of being through these dark and challenging times.”
