Cavalier Gallery has announced a solo exhibition featuring Paul G. Oxborough’s paintings, on display at its West 24th Street gallery from November 2 to December 9, 2023.
The exhibit showcases Oxborough’s latest works, including his iconic bar and restaurant scenes, alongside the release of a new monograph chronicling his career. His portraiture has been shown at venues such as the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and he has contributed to the UK’s National Portrait Gala, among many others. Oxborough’s career spans decades, and he is known for skillfully capturing light in his artworks. Rooted in tradition, Oxborough’s art remains contemporary and timeless, drawing inspiration from his global travels, coming to life in his signature bar and hotel scenes with enveloping faces, glassware, and mirrors.
There are two 2023 paintings “Freddy’s Bar” and “Old King Cole,” that exemplify Oxborough’s ability to work through light’s interplay. At Freddy’s Bar in Amsterdam and the King Cole Bar in New York City, staff members take center stage, with reflections moving between bottles, and glasses, illuminated by background lights.
Beyond portraits and bar scenes, Oxborough’s diverse portfolio encompasses landscapes, marine scenes, cityscapes, and domestic interiors inspired by his global journeys. His command of light and the narrative invites viewers to contemplate the stories behind each canvas.
The public is welcome to meet the artist at the opening reception on Thursday, November 2, from 6:00–8:00 p.m.
